Background
Obon is a traditional period for honouring ancestors and family reunions. It is not a single nationwide statutory public holiday, but many workplaces take leave together.
Impact on travellers
A nationwide homecoming and leisure peak: packed trains/flights/highways and pricier hotels. Crowds stack in Kyoto, coasts and hometowns. Great for local matsuri—only if you booked early.
Extra notes
Peak is often about 13–16 August (varies by region). Often overlaps Gozan Okuribi, Awa Odori and other events—double pressure on transport and lodging.
